If the tenancy agreement prohibits pets, that clause is legally valid. If it does not specify anything, you may, in principle, keep a pet, provided it does not cause a nuisance. Here\u2019s what the law says, the specific obligations regarding dogs, and our advice on how to convince a landlord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you rent a property with a pet in Luxembourg?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, but it all depends on the tenancy agreement. The Ministry of Housing distinguishes between two situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>What your tenancy agreement says<\/th><th>What this means for you<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>It prohibits animals<\/td><td>The clause is lawful. In Luxembourg, a ban set out in the tenancy agreement applies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Read the tenancy agreement before signing it<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check for any clauses regarding pets before committing to a tenancy. If the tenancy agreement prohibits pets and you have one, discuss this with the landlord before signing. Also find out about the building\u2019s owners\u2019 association rules, which may contain their own guidelines on communal living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Obtain a written agreement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the landlord agrees to allow your pet, ensure it is included in the tenancy agreement or in a signed addendum. Do not leave a dog alone and making noise for hours on end; keep communal areas tidy and repair any minor damage as and when it occurs.
